Why Masks?

Masks offer a unique sort of transformation. They are full of paradox: masks reveal and magnify more than they conceal. The simplest puppet can evoke complex emotional reactions. Despite their obvious real presence as objects, mask and puppets can so engage the audience that we forget they are there. We are just watching the play unfold as they transport us to the limits of our imagination.

About Me

I am a multi-disciplinary theatre artist specializing in mask work and puppetry. I have taught puppetry, mask-making and performance to all ages of students in workshops and residencies across the country and I have created masks for clients near and far since 2003.

My interest in masks began in undergraduate study in the Lecoq tradition with Ron and Ludvika Popenhagen at the University of Kansas. After working with In The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre of Minneapolis, I continued forward into further training with Bruce Marrs and Joan Schirle at the Dell'Arte International School.

There have been many wonderful individuals and companies with whom I have collaborated over the years. Look here for more information about them.

Here are a few places I have exhibited:

  • MASKIBITION at Ink People in Eureka, CA (2012- Best Performance Mask; 2009-Honorable Mention)

  • FACADES: A Mask Invitational at The Doll Gardner Gallery in Portland, OR (2010)

  • Incognito at The S.C.R.A.P. Gallery in Portland, OR (2010)

  • Under the Influence in the Ashby Hodge Gallery at Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO (2009)

  • Face the Nation IV Juried Mask Exhibition at UC Davis (2006)
